Call for Extramural Research (EMR) Projects under the LIGO-India Program

About LIGO-India EMR Projects

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave (GW) Observatory (LIGO) - India is an advanced gravitational-wave observatory to be located in Aundha Nagnath, Hingoli district, Maharashtra, India as part of the global network of GW detectors. LIGO-India is a multidisciplinary collaborative mega-science project between a consortium of Indian research institutions and the LIGO Laboratory in USA, along with its international partners.

The LIGO-India project has kept provision for Grant-in-Aid funding support to a few extramural research projects (EMR) based on the LIGO-India Instrument science white paper, which are expected to have multiple benefits, as follows:

  • Perform state-of-the-art research and development for the LIGO-India detector, which can benefit the detector for installation, commissioning, operations, maintenance, and upgradation.
  • A good fraction of the students and postdocs trained through the funded extramural projects are expected to get directly involved in the GW detector activities.
  • Human resource development in a vast set of experimental areas such as, precision measurements & fundamental test, quantum metrology, laser physics & technology, vacuum technology, optical engineering, sensor technology, control systems etc, not limited to gravitational wave instrumentation, which can help development of the country in various ways.

For each selected EMR project, funding will be available for up to three years or the financial sanction time-limit of the LIGO-India project, whichever is earlier.

LIGO-India encourages Indian researchers, satisfying the eligibility criteria, to apply against the advertised projects and actively participate in this exciting mega-science project.

Who can apply?

Eligibility criteria for LIGO-India EMR projects

  • Indian nationals holding a regular academic, research or Professor of Practice position in a recognized academic institution or National Research Laboratory or any other recognized research organization in India.
  • Collaborations among academia, government departments, research institutions, and the industry are encouraged.
  • Participation of researchers from the industry/private research labs as Investigators is also encouraged, provided the industry possess a valid DSIR (Department of Scientific & Industrial Research) approval.
  • PI and Co-PI should have at-least "project duration + 1 year" valid positions in their respective place of work.
  • PI and Co-PI should have required infrastructure for carrying out the proposed research work. EMR projects does not support for basic infrastructure development.
